How-To Guide

Messages

Posting a message to your company Yammer network is similar to sending an email or an instant message, with a few key advantages:

  • Anyone in your organization interested in you or any tag in the message can view the message – you don’t have to decide ahead of time who may be interested in your message, unless you want to.
  • The content of the message is searchable by anyone in the organization – no more silos of important information hidden in email clients spread across your organization.

(Private Groups are an exception; messages are only searchable and viewable to those group members)

Reading messages
Guide_message_full

Each message begins with the profile picture and name of the person who posted the message. Messages that are replies to other messages will also link to the message that it is ‘in reply to’.

Then you will see the message content, which may include one or more tag or member links.

  • Timestamp: indicates when the message was posted.
  • Group: indicates what group the message was posted to.
  • Client: (optional) indicates the type of client used to post the message – from mobile, desktop, IM, iPhone, BlackBerry, or email.
  • Envelope: Use to forward the message to the email address associated with your Yammer account.
  • Delete: (your messages only) use to delete the message.
  • View Thread: Click the green 'in reply to' link on a reply to view the entire thread on one page. The reply you were viewing and the message it is in reply to will be highlighted in green and blue respectively. After you have finished reading the thread, click the Home tab to be directed to your My Feed.
  • Reply: Use to reply to the message.
  • Attachment: (optional) will appear as an image thumbnail or a file link.
Post an update

To post a message as a general update to Yammer, type your message in the update box and hit the Update button. Alternately, you can also send an update to a subset of your network by posting directly to a Group. To post an update to a Group that you have joined, simply click the Group’s vertical tab on the Home page, add your message to the update box, and click Update. Your message will instantly appear in:

(Groups are an exception; Private group messages do not appear in the All feed and are only viewable to those group members, Public group messages do not appear in My Feed of people who have not joined the group).
